How to handle overbetting

Overbetting happens in no' limit Holdem Poker when a player makes a bet that is disproportionately high to the size of the pot. In no limit, pots size means nothing and a player can bet whatever the want. Many aggressive players who are sitting on a large chips stack take advantage of their ability to overbet to bully players whose stacks are smaller to force them to fold their cards, even if they were sitting on a strong hand. In many cases, overbetting in this situation will bring results, but not always. Sometimes a player who is short or medium stacked will feel that their hand is strong enough to call, even if they have to go all in to do so.

Players who are not normally aggressive can also use the overbetting play to stir up their play style a little, even if it costs them a few hands. The worst situation that can happen to a Holdem Poker player is that the rest of the players at the table find them predictable, and therefore easy to read.

Overbetting at Holdem Poker is a strategy that should be used with caution. Players who are chronic overbetters will in their own way become predictable. If they hit a run of great cards and constantly overbet, will begin to scare the rest if the players away and will be unable to extract the maximum value from these hands. On the other hand, if they constantly bluff, the will get caught out more often than not, and their chip stack will gradually wear away.

Overbetting should be looked upon with caution but not totally discarded as an option. It should be kept out of site in Holdem Players box of tools to be used only sparingly.
